Rules now are different than they are in the 20th Century. Marraige, Careers, and even Living arrangements are flipped-flopped(mainly for lower level citizens though). Most Dukes,Counts and Lords managed their own self-sufficient manors. Which caused you from coming to town often. While on the other hand peasants were hired to manage these manors and keep the crops and cattle living and replinished.
